Pirkei Avos Chapter 5 mishna 19:MRS. CHANA BOAS
Comparison of Avrohom Aveinu to Bilam:
1: Bilam had an ayin rah, a malicious eye forever searching for any flaw. Fault-finding is the source of all evil against people. "The evil of Bilam is found in every generation. All those who hate the Jewish people with an intense, deep hatred and who sift through their deeds in order to find fault with which they can accuse them, are named Bilam" (Rebbe) 2: In contrast, the source of Avrohom's chesed, lovingkindness, is his meekness and humility. Avrohom said "I am dust and ashes". This leads directly to שלי שלך, שלך שלך - what's mine is yours, what's yours is yours. 3: Who is an arrogant person? One who is belligerent, grabs for himself; one who is never satisfied.Arrogance leads to endless desires and greed. I deserve more and more......... 4: Bilam was equal in prophecy to Moshe. How can there be a comparison made between Bilam who did not even adhere to the seven Noahide laws to Moshe the most perfect of men? 5: The comparison is alluded to by the Torah's secret of the donkey. A donkey is a חמור the same word for materialism חמריות. Both Moshe and Bilam saddled their donkeys, both related to materialism. Bilam was too intimate with his donkey. He was drawn after and drowning IN materialism. Avrohom placed his possession, the wood and knife, ON his donkey. Avrohom began the process of taking hold of the material . Moshe put his wife and children ON his donkey; thereby advancing this process by using the donkey for his family not only for his possessions. Mashiach will arrive personally riding ON his donkey indicating that the process of conquering the material world will be complete so that everything in the material world will be able to be harnessed for the progress of mankind and to reveal the G-dliness of everything in creation. © Malchus 2007
